The client purchased the Glassworks building around 10 years ago. It is one and a half storeys tall, with stock brick external walls, timber windows and slate roofs. It was originally a historic boat yard, but is now vacant and in a dilapidated condition.

Valerie was commissioned to review development options, to provide the building with a sustainable new future. A range of possible uses were discussed with Dover DC Planning Officers including converting it into either three houses, or six apartments, a gym-fitness suite, an arts-craft-pottery centre, a nursery, or three mixed use live-work units. All the ideas were supported by officers, (apart from the arts-craft centre as this falls under a different Use Class,) but the Council’s preference was for either residential or employment use.

Valerie is developing contemporary design ideas for reconstructing and extending the old Glassworks building, in a manner which respects its industrial heritage and its location in the Middle Street Conservation area.
