30-31 The Strand

Early Victorian mid terraced property in Walmer Sea Front Conservation area, which was previously occupied by three businesses, a hairdresser, an electrical shop and a window manufacturer. The site was completely covered with commercial buildings, from The Strand to York Road behind, and was in a derelict state.  Valerie secured all the necessary Consents to convert the property into a single dwelling house, by demolishing all the redundant commercial space behind the main house and creating a large back garden for the house fronting The Strand, and building a spacious new garage fronting York Road, in traditional materials and detailing. The demolition also provided an opportunity to excavate two lightwells to the rear of the house and create a semi-basement and two new habitable rooms, with French windows. The house itself was beautifully restored and transformed into a contemporary new home, with three bedrooms and fine, stone-clad bathrooms. At first floor the entire double frontage was used to create a stunning living room, with spectacular sea views.
