The Royal Marine Barracks, Deal, was a military installation occupied by the Royal Marines. The Depot (for training Royal Marine recruits) was first established in 1861, occupying part of the Royal Naval Hospital. In 1868 the Depot expanded and took over the nearby 18th-century Army barracks. From 1930, Deal served as the headquarters of the Royal Naval School of Music. In 1977 the training Depot closed; the site then became the headquarters of the newly re-formed 41 Commando, and was renamed Royal Marines, Deal. In 1988 parts of the site were demolished and sold for housing. Valerie has extensive experience of working in Georgian buildings like the Royal Marine Barracks as, in her early career, she was a retained architect to the Marquis of Tavistock and the Trustees of the Bedford estates.
“The Gate Lodge is a Grade II Listed Building in a Conservation Area. We worked with Valerie on two different projects – the first, to create a large new kitchen, and the second, to infill an external courtyard and build a new/third bedroom for our growing family. Both projects required skilful negotiation with Listed Building officers, and we were delighted when Valerie secured the Consents. The two projects enabled us to enlarge our house, adding significant value, and to create a sensational, contemporary home within the existing Listed structure. The Gate House, Admiralty Barracks
